Singing replaced a planned balloon release after a student voiced an environmental concern about releasing more than 200 balloons. Pupils alter birthday festivities in order to protect environment THE SOUND of more than 200 children singing Happy Birthday lifted skyward instead of 210 balloons last Wednesday thanks to a young Queen Mary Community School student’s concern for the environment. Staff and students at the North Vancouver school had planned a mass balloon release as part of the school’s week-long 75t anniversary celebration. Said Queen Mary :-acher Wendy Charters: ‘‘The class had brainstormed some ideas about how we could celebrate the birthday and the kids came up with the idea of letting off balloons for the class and then the whole school.” But I1-year-old Nigel Whiteside approached Charters one Friday afternoon and voiced his con- cerns about the plan to release 210 balloons. “Nigel came up to me after school and said to me he had read that balloons fly over the ocean and are eaten by wildlife,’’ said Charters. “I heard the em- pathy in his voice and I heard it and heard it all through that weekend. He’s a real scientific-minded and empathic child.”’ The staff met on the following Tuesday and decided to replace birthday balloons with birthday voices. Said Nigel: ‘‘E saw a whole bunch of balloons floating down by Lonsdale Quay one time, and | read about it, too.”” West Van Police recover stolen cars WEST VANCOUVER Police re- covered two stofen cers last month after a car chase down Bellevue.
