- Friday, August 19, 1988 - | Task force to study \_/ VS eS) ear thquake readiness Nurses praised for stopping blaze TWO LIONS Gate Hospital staffers are to be commended after their quick action Tuesday morning in extinguishing a blaze, preventing what could have become a serious fire. Maternity ward head nurse Rosemarie Tindale and RN Edna Borden sounded the alarm and extinguished the small blaze after an are welder cutting through the ceiling from the floor above sparked cardboard and fibreglass insulation. From the fire above the nurses’ station, the third-floor maternity ward filled with smoke, and one concerned new mother took her baby to another part of the hospital to escape potential trouble, said North Vancouver City Fire Department Insp. Gavin Soanes. “It could have caused quite a bit of panic,’’ Soanes said of the fire, adding that the hospital staff’s emergency fire training paid off with fast and effective action. “If it (the fire) had fallen down it could have got the nurses’ sta- tion going.”’ C Rail line reopened BC RAIL’S mainline between North Vancouver and Squamish was reopened Thursday morning to both freight and passenger train traffic after five derailed cars and a caboose were cleared from the fine near Britannia Beach. The cars, part of a southbound freight train, derailed just after ! p.m. Wednesday. BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall said a conductor and a rear-end trainman who were ia the caboose, which overturned in the derailment, were shaken up but uninjured. Of the other five cars derailed, three were carrying lumber and two were carrying wood chips. A passenger (rain and the sepgular Royal Hudson run were ter- minated at Squamish Wednesday and passengers bused to North Vancouver. The two trains were returned to North Vancouver early Thursday morning. Wall said the derailment’s cause was still being investigated. Cigarette ALTHOUGH the Lower Mainland is located in an earthquake zone, most residents would probably be unprepared if an earthquake oc- curred. The Greater Vancouver Regional District is setting up a task force on earthquake preparedness in the Lower Mainland with repre- sentation from federal, provincial and local governments. The role of the task force will be to prepare a long-range plan for earthquake preparedness within the GVRD, which includes 16 municipalities and three clectorial areas. This year, the group will work at assessing areas in the Lower Mainland that are at the highest risk. On the North Shore, these would include bridges, major highways, as well as the Cleveland and Seymour Falls Dams, accor- ding to Bud Elsie of the GVRD. Much of Richmond would be at risk, because of the boggy soil, which could liquify during an ear- thquake, said Elsie. The GVRD_ has commiited $100,000 to this kind of assess- ment, with additional funding to be sought from federal and pro- vincial governments and other jurisdictions participating in the study. For assistance, working groups will be established, involving fire chiefs, police chiefs and repre- sentatives from ambulance ser- vices, utilities, hospitals, schools and engineering organizations.
