repair industry has managed to avoid running aground in
the continuing low tide of the world shipbuilding market.

Asa result of that tenacity and a
collective industry ingenuity and
flexibility, the full range of ship-
building: expertise has remained
alive and kicking along the North
Shore waterfront.

Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc.,
the area’s largest and longest
established shipyard, has managed
to tread water while awaiting ar-
rival of the company’s $350 mil-
lion Polar 8 icebreaker contract by

build container cranes for the Port
of Tacoma and a $10.2 million
contract to build dockloading
equipment for an Alaskan mining
company.

eries and Oceans Canada.

The shipyard also completed
delivery of the $97 million Henry
Larsen icebreaker in the first week
of July after technical problems
had delayed delivery of the vessel
for one year.

Construction on the Polar 8 is
scheduled to begin in mid-1989,
and will create an estimated 1,000
jobs over an 18-month peak
period. :
