PERCY NORMAN BEAT North Shore teens take swimming trophies NORTH Shore swimmers performed well at Percy Norman Pool’s Dec. 12 to 14 swim meet. Trophies were awarded for the best swim of the meet in each age group and North Shore swimmers won four of a possible six trophies. West Van Otters Cory Creed and Scott Elliot both won awards for their 50m freestyle swims in the 11 and 12-year-old divisions. Chena Swim Club’s Suzy Stanton took the trophy in the girls 15-17-yeur-old 200m freestyle divisions, while Hyack’s Ian Hylands trium- phed in the boys 15-17- year-old 200m _ individual medley. Prior to 1964, a free ski- school had been operated on the slopes of Grouse Moun- tain. The mountain’s popu- larity was rapidly increasing at the time, and its management was beginning to see the potential of a ski school. _ During that year, a young Norwegian skier settled in Vancouver, initially to teach skiing at the newly developed Whistler Moun- tain. A shrewd businessman, Ornulf Johnsen had taught thousands to ski throughout Norway, in South America, and England. Grouse management. saw in him their ideal. man, and in the winter of 1964, the Grouse _Mountain- Ski School was founded. .. "Twenty years and over 150,000 skiers - later, the school is a world-class ski training centre. - -- Phe school is best known for its Headway program, ‘introduced by Johnsen: in 1972. The Headway method consists of four two-hour lessons using skis of graduating lengths. The method was greeted with ini- tial scepticism by. many ski- school professionals, ~ but Johnsen stuck to his belief that the shorter ski length would enable a first-time skier to learn the basic skills | in a shorter time period. >In December’ 1972, the first Headway groups took ‘to the slopes, alongside stu- ‘dents learning to ski the conventional way.
