Created, written and directed by North Van’s Peter O’Rourke, the play is an ambitious undertaking. Although opening night marks the beginning of the run, it is, in many ways, the end of the road for O'Rourke now that his role is sub- stantially over. The theatrical project began over two years ago when O'Rourke, who has done a great deal of kids’ theatre, began to run into ad conflicts with school bureaucracy. His frustration, and that of the students he met, sparked the idea of looking at high school from a students’ point of view. Thousands of survey questionnaires were mailed to school kids ali over town asking them to sum up school in one word and say what they did and didn’t like about their particular ® 6306 ——— Soocgeceses® o€@60 OPENING TONIGHT AT PRESENTATION HOUSE Skool tells students’ story school. Each student was asked for an assessment of his or her ability in school, and finally each was asked to finish a sentence that began School is “and I got some very interesting an- swers to that” laughs O'Rourke. Students were then invited to participate in workshops and share their opinions about school and ideas about Skool. They also learn about theatre. Since then, the play has been rewritten, revised, lengthened, edited. The result is a 40 scene “collage play” incorporating 20 musical numbers. ; The cast has been pared down to 12, seven girls and five boys.
