A $1,000 “doll” donated to the North Shore Family YMCA by the West Van- couver Kiwanis Club could help save the lives of many future heart attack victims. The doll, a special lifesize replica of. a human body, is the Kiwanis’ contribution to the “Y’s’ recently launched Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). project — now being organized at West Van's’ Inglewood Centre. . Time is the crucial factor when dealing with a. heart attack..It's estimated that 80 per cent of all heart attack victims could be saved if treatment was available within two minutes. Meanwhile, it normally -takes a fire hall inhalator or Doll will help save lives ambulance a minimum of four minutes upward to reach a victim. The answer is to train as many ordinary citizens as possible in CPR so that they _ are equipped to deal with a heart attack case instantly, right on the spot. And it can be done. - The model for North America is King County, Washington, where more than 280,000. citizens have ‘now received CPR training through schools and com- munity organizations. King County is now the safest place on the continent ‘to have a heart attack. ’ The North Shore ‘Y’ aims to duplicate that feat. With the help. of volun- teers and donations of essential equipment such as the Kiwanis’ doll it has set itself a 1981 goal of 1,000- 1,200 local citizens trained in CPR and ready to start 7 reviving any heart attack victim without a moment’ Ss delay. The course takes a total of only four hours. In sub- sequent years the “Y’ plans to greatly increase the number of CPR-trained people on ~- the North Shore as more instructors become available. February is Heart Month, a particularly appropriate month to start participating. For further information on how you can help the CPR project call T.
