It takes hard work, tenacity and a solid sense of self-esteem, according to management consultant Carol Sapin Gold. And it takes more: adaptability, con- sistency and energy — the essential ingredients of what Gold calls her ACE philosophy of success. “You're nothing without an acronym today,” she The ability to adapt is the first kéy in the ACE theory, she says. “The ability to roll with it, to ride with it — the ability to go along with that which is new and novel, the ability to experiment.” The idea germinated when - she learned from Jet Propulsion Laboratories, one of her clients, how astronaut Jim Lovel’s body temperature had returned to normal in record time following the crisis during which his space missile caught fire. Lovel had been well- prepared and, in the moment of crisis, he was able to adapt. Along with the ability to adapt, goes the ability to analyze and to anticipate. “Why is it that we are always being surprised? Why is it that every year when that amazed?” CAROL SAPIN GOLD | today, says Gold, “But are you anticipating for tomorrow? The ability to utilize change in your life is essential.” Anybody can be good once in a while, but con- sistency separates. the winners from the losers. ‘Consistency defines reputation; consistency creates the environment that invites success.” Consistency in the prusuit of increased productivity, of effectiveness, of excellence, includes the ability to listen. “Why are you. still speaking? Your listener left four minutes ago.” That was the provocative title of Gold's after-dinner speech at a recent meeting of Sales and Marketing Executives of Vancouver. “I'm speaking to you at about 100 to 120 words a minute. Your mind, which is the most incredible com- puter, can analyze and digest anywhere from 800 to 1,000 words a minute. You have all sorts of time to tune me out...” Gold says we are so often caught up in what we are _ Saying, we don’t realize that all the time we are speaking, the other person is busy thinking about what he or she is going to say the moment we stop speaking. “We get people's attention by speaking about the one thing that fascinates them. — that, of course, is them. We do it by listening to what they have to say — and then we use their words to come back with want we want to Mae West a’serenely contented woman’ HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - America’s enduring § sex symbol, Mac West, was characterized as a “serenely contented woman” during simple last rites Tuesday afternoon for the actress. West died last Saturday at the age of 88. Ross Hunter, longtime friend and movie producer, said West had “an absorp- tion with self that seemed to border on totality, yet the more she concentrated on being Mae West, the more she gave of herself to others.” Hunter, who delivered the euology for the legendary screen siren Tuesday after- noon at a private service for about 100 invited guests, said the actress was “a serenely contented woman who accomplished all she set out to do.” say.” The E in the ACE theory stands for energy. “How sad it is, that we think and talk constantly about external energy, and not nearly enough about internal energy. The internal energy to make it all happen; the internal energy to move, to pian. “Bnergy comes from desire. You have to want it; you have to want to be there.” Gold says she hears a lot about how -‘you can't beat the system.” “People seem system, stymied by the controlled, awkward and intimidated. And yet, how sad — because, of course, we are the system.” At such times, she is prompted to ask, “What have you done for the system lately? What new idea have you brought in? What innovative plano, what time-saving program have you initiated?” It’s a matter of respon- sibility. We choose our jobs and our lifestyles; nobody forces us into anything. “You are what you do and how you doit.” Give UNICEF gifts and cards J] CHIC, 1412 Marine Drive GLENEAGLES SCHOOL, 6350 Marine Drive THE MAIL BOX, 6607 Royal Ave., Horseshoe Bay and help a child Participating SUPER VALU - SAFEWAY STORES Look for UNICEF cards at: CHATEAU COIFFURES LTD. 144 Lonsdale ALPINE MEADOWS, 2444 Marine Drive KNIT & STITCH SHOPPE, 867 Park Royal N.
