“ma x Unemployed Ca are a A8-Wednesday, March 26, 1980 - North Shore Ne eseanerrEe : ‘resource’ Dear Editor: To adopt your suggestion that unemployment become a “respectable occupation” would be more defeatist than enlightening for a country such as ours. In “A New Look at the Jobless” you claim the 900,000 unemployed Canadians present a menacing problem to our industrial society. I would like to suggest these unemployed represent a resource for Canada. I agree we are all sick of rampant consumerism which in itself fuels inflationary credit fires. However, we have the necessary energy and raw materials in this land of ours to enable the unemployed to participate in a healthy and productive manner. The key is productivity. I feel your European proposals of banning overtime, work sharing, etc., to be counter productive in a competitive world. If we were each to double our personal! productivity we would open up world markets hitherto closed to Canada. (Witness the Japanese since 1974). Hence the unemployed would be needed to fill the added export orders for both raw materials and manufactured goods. To say the “guilt” for unemployment should be placed on society implies we live in a non-determinist world. In Canada the choice is still the individual's. Let's not give up the chalienge because we've failed in the past. David W. Morgan North Vancouver Gas cap theft a ‘dirty deed’ Dear Editor: This letter is to the person who was seen stealing the gas cap off my Toyota car while it was parked at the Inglewood, Private Hospital on Sunday afternoon, March 16. While I was in the hospital doing a good deed, you were outside doing a dirty deed. I hope you can sleep at night. It's a shame we can’t even visit the sick without someone spoiling it for us. If you should have a change of heart, you can return my gas cap to the address below. Thanks a lot. Mrs. E. Gardner 603 East 4th Street . North Vancouver V7L 1J9 MR. Doug has a vast experience in banking, having served with a chartered bank as well as more than 10 years in the credit union community Dear Editor: “Cats are good friends” (M. Rose, Mailbox, March 16) requires — nay, demands — rebuttal. I was mildly astonished to have Rose interpret my previous letter as cats vs dogs. I'm certain that mest readers saw it as cats vs birds. I don’t even own a dog! Furthermore, I'm quite in support of dog controls. In the matter of defecation mentioned by Rose, no one = enjoys cleaning up after someone else’s dog — or cat. Snll, I prefer a dog deposit in plain sight to sticking my fingers into a cat contribution when I’m running my _ hands through newly-cultivated soil. Rose is wrong in deducing s vs. birds ....Rou that I appear to want “the entire feline population decimated”. Good Lord. All I suggested was that cats be brought under some kind of licensing control. In Bulletin No. 1, Biological Series 10, of the Victoria Memorial Museum in Ottawa, internationally- recognized and highly- respected researcher Percy Taverner had this to say about cats and birds: “Probably the worst enemy of the Robin is the domestic cat, and annually great numbers fall prey to it. “In general, we cannot have béth cats and birds close about us, for only very rarely is it possible to teacha cat not to catch birds.
