And the $629,682 total damage caused by fires. was the third highest per capita loss in the last ten years. These are the main points in the departments annual report for 1979. A total of 3850 buildings were surveyed and 34.5 per cent of houses were found to have smoke detectors while 7 per cent of apartments had detector units installed. The survey also found that 23 per cent of apartments and 30 per cent of the houses surveyed now plan to install smoke detectors. In upcoming develop- ments, the department is expecting iO Tecelve a new acnial ladder sometime in the next few months. According to the report, the ladder will be the tirst of its kind on the Pacific coast. Chet Hallaway also says in the report that he 1s hopetul that in I98O) a ‘paramedic’ team will begin operaung on the North Shore. Hallaway savs he has no concrete reasons for beheving such a team will be sStalroned in this area but added there will be a group of paramedics graduating in the spring who may be Stabhoned somewhere in the Greater Vancouver atea @ GOVT.
