CONFIDENCE ‘SHAKEN’ Alderman Sorenson did not participate or vote on the matter at that meeting because the applicant had applied for a mortgage with the North Shore Credit Union, of which Sorenson 1s a branch manager, and Sorenson was advised he may be in conflict of interest if he debated the matter in council. “These delays and resubmission (by the ap- plicant) are costly for small builders let alone, larger developers and could result in financial disaster for builders of modest means,” Sorenson said. “YT cannot do a good job for the city if I do not get complete, factual in- formation, and my _ con- fidence in staff is shaken, when I see repeated in- stances, of what 1 consider sloppy work or have to launch extensive research in order to satisfy myself I am doing whatis right.” “Tam a business man. nota detective.” Sorenson said that the inefficient work on the part of City staff leads to “extra work for all members of council to investigate or correct, and at worst causes unnecessary litigation’ or delays in handling matters that come before council.” NOT HEADHUNTING While Sorenson maintains he ts not “headhunting” and views the staff as professionals, he said “based on the salaries we are paying, I would expect we have a group of some of the most talented muncipal staff anywhere in_ British Columbia.” In council discussion on the rezoning matter that particularly upset Sorenson, Mayor Jack Loucks defended the staff The City Admimstrator Bd Raymond pointed out that the apphcant did not give the true dimensions of his lot in the appheation and this is why the floor area seemed to exceed the acceptable limit DIVORCE PROBLEMS? Because the application now has to be referred to the Advisory Planning Com- mission for its report, Alderman Stella Jo Dean is also concerned about the delay facing the applicant. She also was upset with the ornginal staff report recommending rejection of the application because it had the apparent potential to become a fourplex. And Sorenson still feels that staff did not delve deeply enough into the matter. “In future,” Sorenson concluded in his written statement, “I will expect reports placed before me to be complete and factual, and accompanied by any relative oP.
