"Charred hulks and melted tires were all that remained — of several vehicles belonging to tenants of an apartment building in North Van- couver, after a. fire in. an underground garage early Saturday morning. A spokesman for the North Van City fire department said fire fighters were called to 1520 Chesterfield at 5:10 a.m. ‘where were greeted by thick smoke filling the garage. Smoke was"so thick, the spokesman said, firefighters had to crawl on their stomachs and use air masks ‘to reach the fire. “The garage has ap- parently only got one en- trance,” the spokesman said, “and firemen had to take 150 feet of hose to the far end of ingot fre the building.” - The fire had started in a storage area, he said, and spread to cars parked én the lot. It took City firemen about 15 minutes to get the fire under control he said. The locker storage area where the fire apparently began was destroyed, along with the contents of the lockers. In addition, five or. six cars were gutted, and another 10 or so suffered varying degrees of damage. An apartment above the garage suffered smoke damage, the said, and a couple of other apartments also suffered minor smoke damage.
