record a tough one to swailt Dear Editor: Open letter to Bill Bell: Way should [vote Liberal? Your advertisement in the North Shore News says and { quote “f will protect your Health Care Program.” How are you going to do thar? What happened to the tens of billions of doflars that the Liberals have withheld causing such disarray nation wide. What have the six B.C. Liberals done to help preserve health care? What sbout the hepatitis issue? Was it my imagination when [ saw on television Liberal backbenchers weeping when the “free” vote went through? What could you possibly do that they haven't been able to do so far. What changes have they made to the political complexion of western Canada? What makes you any different than them? Jean Chretien has even admitted ro going to a private clinic on the news. So much for a one-tier health-care system, Knowing full well that the British parliamentary system is, in essence, fascist by its sheer nature and existence, how are you going to get through to Jean Chrétien, an elected dictator, to make any changes, let alone any Liberal from the West? One only need to Sook at what happened to John Nunziata for proof of autocratic cule by the PM. Is Ted MecWhinney running again? | Vehicle levy adds insult to injury for stressed commuter What kind of influence do you have with the PM con- sidering you've only met the PM once? ff vou are elected what would you do to help stop the continual arrogance of Chrétien, the pork barreling (one only has to look at the 16 police investigations in Chretiens’ home riding, let alone the other lo), government corruption, and the kleptocracy of the human resources department. These are only a few examples of “liberalism” but there are more issues PE haven't touched on like gun controls, abortion issues, the Young Offenders Act, pedophiles and nvass murderers to name a few, How about law and order? On Feb. 16, 1997 Jean Chretien assaulted Bill Clennent, a demonstrator, by grab- bing dim by the throat, forcing him to the ground and los- ing 2 tooth in the process. On May 6, 1997 the charges were stayed. [ contacted the Department of Justice and didn’t get past the recep- tionist for some answers, she hung up on me. When T con- tinued my inquiries she threatened to get the RCMP involved. Recently two young people were arrested and charged for laying a pie in the face of Jean Chretien. No doubt he was embarrassed bur not physically injured. Why the hypocrisy and double standard? Does this mean everyone can yet away with assauit? Also, why should 1 vote Liberal when Elinor Caplan makes harsh statements like a vote for Transit vision missing Dear Editor: ; \.. We here on the North Sheze woke on a recent morning to find’ that we were again pris- oners of our own homes, How many years have we been asking for a third crossing? What have _ We gotten? “Bridge upgrades” and a “Mickey ‘! Mouse ferry” in niiniature that links us from nowhere handy to nowhere handy now, to add insult to injury, we are being asked to pay a pro- posed transit or vehicle tax ranging from $40 to 40. . . Currently my wife has an average 25-minute “commute from North Vancouver to Burnaby. If /She-were to take rapid wansit her commute would be 75-90 minutes minimum, cach way. : What incentive has rapid transit to offer her? As for myself, Iam a salesman. ‘In the past I would make 8-12 calls a day and vould go wherever the customers called me to. Now I make haif that number of calls a day. Gas prices that magically jump to 10 cents a litre from - Morning to afternoon help to discourage me on the ameunt I drive. Not particularly a profitable “way to go about developing a business, by cut- ’ ting “down on the calls you make and the cus- “tomers you meet. If I were to take rapid transit I shudder to think of how litde business I could et done .vs the time i would be waiting for a bus i or a SkyTrain to periodically roll by. Vancouver has its own transit and trattic needs that we all know, bue do not tax the many to appease the few. Knock on my door when you are looking for tax money to build a third crossing. That I would consider. But can you imagine the uproar ifali of the GVRD and other out-laying areas were to be taxed to build this crossing? The stink over the money, the cutting down of their scarce few trees would rival all the Money Mushroom plants in the world. However, though it seems OK for us “provincials” to be mugged for whatever the city needs. Regardless, we fail to get any respect when we say that our sicighborhuods are just as important to us (Horseshoe Bay and the call for expansion) as any Shaughnessy neighbourhood. - In addition, that a speedy commute to work means just as much to us as it means to a “big city” dweller. Those of us on the North Shore are bending over and letting do to us what nor- mally calls for, dinner, drinks and instructions on safe sex first, but would the city taxpayers be as willing, to return the favour? Alternatively, would any political party in power have the brass knuck- les to even ask? Tom Cattermole North Vancouver Dear Editor: The financial support of the federal government. for the bridge from Prince Edward Island is either a proper example of a federal function or is one of the greatest examples of Liberal patronage in the fate half century. The failure of the Liberal zovernment in Ottawa to ead the projects of both " SkyTrain No. 2 and a transit tunnel under Burrard Inlet is by comparison an awful dereliction of duty in gov- ernment.
