Begin the benign senior years Eugene Kaetiis Contributing Writer AS a senior of several years standing, I come in contact with many contemporaries. Most are active, reason- ably cheerful, enjoying their “golden years,” in spite of occasional aches and pains. Nevertheless, survey iter survey shows that seniors are the most racist part of our population, and more politi- cally right wing, even reac- tionary. This is, I believe, selec- tive misanthropy directed against not only visible minorities, but people of “strange” cultural practices, welfare recipients, immi- grants, and oh yes, young people. It isn’t difficult to under- stand the negative attitude THE following people have appeared in No: Vancouver provincial court: Before Judge Jerome Paradis on Dec. 8, 1999: Dale Carmen Reinhardt, 39, of Bowen Island, was jailed six months after he I vihbton font & bei, Comes with detecwble parse, Sin Red, Yellow, Deni Blue or Green. One is the increase in sick- ness and disability which often happens as one ages. It’s hard to be benign in outlook when vou are (or someone close to you is) iff lor unable to funetion, espe- cially if the illness is lite- threatening. Another factor is a grow- ing imposed awareness of mortality, The young rarely think about death, but for older people such thoughts can be unrelenting. Justifving one’s life is a widespread phenomenon, but so is justifying one’s months’ probation after he pleaded guilty to breaching probation from a Young Offenders Act sentence by using non-prescription drugs. In an age of diminishing faith, if peo- ple can come to believe that the world, its inhabitanis, its practices, and history are all tainted by various degrees of inherent vileness, perhaps they think they can depart this life with less distress. Maybe so, but E doubt it. What I do not doubt is that it makes living more dis- tasteful, not only for those entertaining such thoughts, but for everyone else. Whatever the disappoint- ments in life and the failure of the world to meet our expectations (and who could deny that), achieving and maintaining an attitude of hope, interest, enjoyment, appreciation, and above all benignity, is probably the most usefi:l trait people can develop at any age and in any culture.
