12 — Friday, June 27, 1997 — North Shore News Closure urged Garden Avenue residents ask for a Safer street By Myke Clark Contributing Writer CLOSE Garden Avenue. That’s just what a group of resi- dents have petitiened North Vancouver District Council to do. But whether or not council pays heed to the residents is another matter. Councii: passed a motion that will allow staff to re-examine the issues regarding traffic on Garden Avenue. The cail for action follows a fatal’ accident that occurred at the corner of Garden Avenue and Hope Road. Douglas Folk, a 40-year-old North Vancouver father of four, was killed when another vehicle ran the stop sign on Hope Road and collided with Folk’s van. It’s just the type of accident that local residents. want to prevent. Dalia. Gottlieb-Tanaka calls the accident “a real trauma to the neighborhood.” she sums up the residents posi- tion: “I talk *tl I’m blue in the face —!I hope someone is going to lis- ten to us.” She expiained the situa- tion as “...a highway going through this area ... like opening a pandora’s box to more development.” And more traffic problems. She implored council to take the issue seriously. “We need council and the mayor to put their full weight behind Garden Avenue residents. Please support us.” Gottlieb-Tanaka outlined her group’s plan for council to make the area safer: mM close Garden Avenue at Hope Road, leaving it open from Marine Drive to Hope Road; @ rcopen the intersection of Hape and Capilano Roads and install a traffic signal to regulate the inter- section; @ instalj an island at the intersec- tion of Garden and Capilano to slow traffic. Residents have also submitted a petition to council asking for the recommendations to be imple- mented and “response to the peti- tion has been overwhelming,” according to resident Chris Coukell. Several councillors voiced con- cerns they did not want a report from staff which did not include input from the community. The staff report will be presented to council July 7.
