A noteworthy career path Musical talent russ in the family By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer dearin@nsnews.com EXCEPT for the pale red hickey on her neck which gives her away, Theresa Rudolph scems a fairly normal 17-year- old. “People who don’t know that it’s from playing the viola give me fiinny looks some- times,” she says, She laughs, Rudolph has played violin since age 3, switching to viola a couple of years ago because “it just sort of seemed to be my thing. 1 prefer the sound — it’s deeper, richer, lower.” Her musical ability is not surprising when one realizes her father, John, is principal percussion for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and mother Kathleen, che assistant principal flute. But, says Rudolph, they've never forced nusic on her. “They've always said ‘We'll love you no raatier what you choose to do.” They're pretty cool.” After finishing Grade 11 last June at Argyle secondary school, she spent the summer playing music at the Banff Festival of the Arts, chen packed her viola, said goodbye to her family and friends and headed to Cleveland, There, she was on seholar- ship as one of 16 pre-college students studying in’ The Cleveland Institute of Musie’s Young Artists program, ft was a challenging eight and a half months for her, “There were times this year when Ewondered if this. is what Twant, ft was hard. And [can’t see myself being really happy doing anything else.” For her Grade 12 year, she attended a private girls’ school in the morning, then bused back to the institute for an afternoon and evening of music classes, personal instruc: tion, practice and homework, “Twas tired a lot. I want to be happy so | have to keep things in perspective.” Next year, she'll be a fresh- man at the institute, working on her Bachelor of Musie in viola performance. She’s already looking forward to it.
