My Christmas wish for the
Canucks and the other remaining
NHL teams in Canada is that thes
find a way to prosper despite the
70-cent Canadian dollar and the
Fox Network's attempt to change
the face of the game.

Contemplation of declining
NHL membership in the country
of hockey's birth hardly makes for
happy Christmas reading among
Canadian hockey fans. The
Nordiques are now the
Avalanche in Denver. Next season
the Winnipeg Jets will be the
Phoenix Something-or-Others in
Arizona.

Perhaps the Road Runners, the
name used in the early 1960s by
the Phoenix entry in the old pro-
fessional Western League.

How long can the frightfully
inept Ottawa Senators remain in
the nation’s capital, even with
their new building, the Palladium,
opening next month?

So far, only 6,000 season's
tickets sold for an arena that will
seat 18,000.

And how about those
Edmonton Oilers? They could be
in line for a $7 million NHL sub-
sidy, but only if they start filling
all the seats, sell all the unsold
advertising space on the boards
and sell ail the luxury skyboxes.
At present only a third are sold.

If they don’t do all of this, the
NHL will consider Edmonton a
lost cause and owner Peter
Pocklington, the corporate wel-

fare bums’ pinup boy, wilh take his
team to Nashville. That is. if
Citawa doesn't beat him to it
