42 — Wednesday, January 17, 1996 ~ North Shore News New heart just keeps ticking A 72-YEAR-OLD medical marvel celebrated a hearty [Oth anniversary Friday with SQ friends and family mem- vers at his West Vancouver hese stan Noble e+ ~ws Reporter “Things are going great.” said Daniel Izzard, formerly the oldest heart-transplant patient in Canadian history. The impressionist painter was a cause celebre in 1986, when the otherwise-healthy 62-year-old became a guinea pig to test whether people over 55 should receive new tickers. “L was the first to break that sound barrier," he said Monday. The non-smoker and social drinker said he was pegged as the ideal candidate for the experiment because he was in good physical shape. However, his heart was falling victim to idiopathic car- diomyopathy, a virus that kills heart tissue and eventually, said Izzard, the victim. His journey to University Hospital in London, Ont. received wide media coverage nationally, and netted him letters from around the world. Back then, said Izzard, heart transplants for older people were a . major feat. “Nowadays,” continued the medical trendsetter, “heart trans- plants are just standard therapy.” lezard_ said he still takes drugs — every day to reduce his | immune system to the point it won't reject the donated organ, which came from a young girl, And he gets occasion- al check-ups at Vancouver General Hospital. Other than that, no restrictions are placed on his activities, except by Izzard, who acknowledges he — fike many people — should exercise more, “Fm a painter and | get caught up in work more than anything else.” “I don't feel my age and people tell nie T don't look my age.” Izzard said. “Maybe they're being polite.” Before the operation, Izzard was bedridden. Izzard counis his blessings for the operation. “It's 10 years of life 1 wouldn't have had otherwise,” he said. Since the operation, he's remar- ried and continued his now 40-year professional painting career. “Quite successful, | guess you'd call me,” said the non-starving artist. His new life is a full life. he added. Examples of Izzard’s work hang in the Harrison Galleries in West Vancouver and Vancouver.
