One idea just leacis to another. {| found the word cowbird, for example, such an odd combination — you may not know what one looks like, but how do vou imagine it would look? That’s how a lot of my work comes into being.” While more sober artists may view his work as hopelessly superficial (Kiss admits there are no messages here), he says his intention is simply to make peo- ple smile. “It’s not serious. You don’t have to figure it out,” he says. “It’s also «cif-therapy,” he adds wryly. Kiss takes his therapeutic byproducts public with a solo show running at the Seymour Art Gailery in Deep Cove until Sunday, Oct. 2. The exhibit includes a selec- tion of sculpture and recent monoprints, which Kiss has shown only once before. (The paint for the monocolors attracted him to printing like Brando to a buffet: “When | saw the colors, | “wanted to eat them.”) His new work is still quintes- sential Kiss. “It’s still Gary Larson meets wood,” adding that his art is getting brighter and “definitely more twisted.” Makes you wonder what he means by twisted; after all, this is a guy who drives around West Vancouver with a brilliant plastic dinosaur perched on the hood of his silver pickup. During one of his more mis- chievous moods, ar so the story goes, Kiss affixed a squirting device from his dashboard to the prehistoric beast thus enabling him to randomly shower unsus- pecting passers-by with a simple flick of the finger. “(squirt them {innocent pedes- trians) at the crosswalk. It’s very satistying.” All this silliness isn’t so strange once you've considered the life and times of Peter Kiss. In many ways, he’s still a kicl getting bis thrill from practical jokes. And a disciplined kid at that. Kiss is militarily strict about the amount of time he spencls playing with cedar and paint. “1 start at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 6 p.m., with three-quarters of an hour off for lunch. I'm dedicated. I'm a compulsive worker.” He’ll need his strong work ethic because the growing num- ber of galleries that represent him are all clamoring for more Kiss craft.
