Graphic Dorothy Foster THE POOLE/HAGGERTY Cottage on Bowen Island, built in 1920, was first e summer home. Bowen Island cottage is nestled in virgin woods DURING THE summer I was fortunate enough to be one of the many participants in the “People, Plants and Places Tour” arranged by the Bowen Island Historians and Mem- orial Garden Society. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorothy Foster The weather was great, and again the residents of Bowen Island opened their doors to the public and displayed great hospitality to all of the people taking the tour. Many sites had displays of photos and memorabilia as you approached the cottages or homes, and the Old Union Steamship Store, the tour headquarters, also had a display. It was there that I met Joan Haggerty, a writer and high school teacher who had recently spent time at the family cottage working on her latest novel, The Invitation, pub- lished by Dougtas and McIntyre. Two of the massive trees on the property were pointed out to me later as being virgin growth timber, After | had sketched the cottage 1 chatted with the owners and their friends and visitors on the deck, and then was taken on a tour of the inside of the cottage. Amazingly, it is pretty much the same inside now as it was years ago. It was like taking a trip into the past. On the porch there was a write- up about the cottage written by Robin Pretious (Irene Poole’s daugh- ter). “In the summer of 1919, my grandparents, Clarence and Henrietta Poole and their four children were tenting above the lagoon. My grand- father became friends with a Mr. Jarvis who was tenting on the point See Generation page 19 The Opening of our new factory/showroom at 977 West Ist Street in North Vancouver.
