HOME & GARDEN Essential s service ae THE IMPORTANCE of our lighthouses up and down the coast cannot be understated. At a time when there is talk about automating them I have decid- ed to illustrate one that most Lower Mainland residents will recognize — the Point Atkinson Lighthouse. RORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorathy Foster it will be declared a National Historic Site at an official dedica- tion ceremony on Sept. 18. There will be officials from Ottawa, _ interested MPs and many local Tepresentatives present. The Point Atkinson Lighthouse stands on a prominent outcropping on the point that Spanish explorer José Narvaez sighted in 1791. The site was named Point Atkinson by _ Capt. Vancouver on June 14, 1792, and the first lighthouse was built here in 1874, The wall of the original tower, still stands near the present tower, which was designed by Colonel Anderson and built between 1911 and 1912. Anderson, a colorful figure of the time, was responsible for pro- moting the instalation of a number of lighthouses along the coast. * Some interesting information, on a plaque overlooking the light- G =~ —— a ‘Ve 14 7, ANE j Graphic Dorothy Foster THE POINT Atkinson Lighthouse at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver was built in 1911-1912, house where [ sketched it, says the tower is 60 feet high, the light is NEWS photo tite Wakefetd LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER Jerry Watson keeps a watchful eye an the waterways off Point Atkinson. The Choice With The Most Choices. 108 feet above high water, the light beam is a 500 watt bulb, and the foghor range is 10 miles. This plaque was mounted on a large rock at this lookout in 1967 with R. Edwin Woodward present, the grandson of Edwin Woodward, the first keeper. Listed at the end of the plaque are the names of men who have been responsible for providing reli- able ‘round-the-clock weather reports, and saving Jives in an area where only they could see boats and people in distress, something that automation can never do. For anyone interested in further information on Point Atkinson Lighthouse, read West Vancouver resident Don Graham's Keepers of the Light, a recipient of a Haig- Brown award for the best B.C. book of non-fiction or his second book on other lighthouses, Lights of the Inside Passage.
