German automaker moves into Mexico’s new market BMW AG recently announced its intention to establish a subsidiary, BMW de Mexico S.A. in Mexico City. Effective this month, BMW de Mexico will assume responsibility for those functions previously car- tied out by the Mexican importer Grupo Bavaria. The first exclusive BMW deal- ership is scheduled to open soon in the Mexican capitai with others stated for 1996 openings in Guadalajara and Monterrey. The German automaker sub- sidiary will also manage a new automobile assembly operation in Toluca, located 60 kilometres west of Mexico City. BMW is hoping to gain better access to the rapidly growing Mexican market. After Brazil, Mexico is the largest automobile market in Latin America. with positive future growth prospects. In 1993, the car market in Mexico reached a total of 398,000 new vehicles. Industry analysts predict this figure will increase to 650,000 cars in the near future. BMW will begin assembling several hundred 3-Series cars for focal sale and distribution in 1995. The vehicles will be produced from kits that have been prefabri- cated in BMW's German plants. The company will use an exist- ing assembly plant and employ 160 workers at the new facility. “COLLISION SPECIALISTS | Our 36th Year 1.C.B.C. - B.C.A.A. - A.R.A, Electronic exhaust tuner one of Stealth’s many gimmicks handbrake is positioned very close APPROVED CENTRE FREE COURTESY CARS FOR COLLISION REPAIRS “UFETIME GUARANTEE” From page 24 Tour setting is reasonably comfort- able. My favourite gimmick on the Stealth is the electronic exhaust tuner. The sound of the exhaust can be varied from the cockpit. A but- ton on the dash lets the driver choose between a raspy, racy exhaust note, or 2 more subdued one. Despite its imposing demeanor, the Stealth is not a difficult car to drive once you get into it. However, entering the cockpit ic difficult because of its low roofline and get- ting into the rear seat requires pret- zel-like contortions. Headroom in the front is barely adequate while rear headroom and legroom jus! isn’t adequate. The driver-oriented cockpit has a 290 kmn-h (180 m.p.h.) speedome- ter, 7,000 r.p.m. tachometer, oil pressure gauge, turbo bonst gauge, dual airbags, leather seats, automat- ic temperature control, and a small TV-like screen displaying ventila- tion functions. A superb Infinity stereo with graphic equalizer and 150-watt amplificr is standard. One beet: two tiny horn buttons are positioned on the steering wheel spokes rather than in the center of the steering-wheel hub where the horn should be. Another ergonomic gaffe: the to the gear Jever. My biggest concern, however, is the driving position. The roof and windshield headliner are too low and the side pillars arch inwards near the front passenger's head. ‘The feeling of confinment may be more psychological than real, but I'm sure that tail drivers would have some difficulties. The Stealth's capabilities go well beyond the limits of most dri- vers and most roads. Uf you're considering buying this car, f recommend you take a high performance driving course for your own safely and enjoyment. Volkswagen Golf tops 15 million mark VOLKSWAGEN RECENTLY achieved a notable production ‘milestone — the production of ‘ the 15 millionth Golf. So far, 250,835 Golfs have been sold in Canada.
