appointed chairman of the
Worker’s Compensation Review
Board.

The review board is the first
level of appeal on worker's com-
pensation claims.

O'Brien is a former vice-chair-
man and member of the review

commissioner with the appeal divi-
sion of the WCB. The body is the
final level of appeal for the com-
pensation system.

The review board holds hearings
at least every four months in 14
communities throughout the
province. Most appeals are heard
by a three-person panel.

visit with
Dykeman

conducting a sit-in at Mayor
Murray Dykeman's office.

The nurses eventually met with
the mayor, who, as Chairman of the
North Shore board of health, is the
nurses’ employer,

frustrated by the lack of response
the nurses received from their
meeting with Dykeman.

“His stance is that he is talking
to people and working on tt, but
nothing's happening,” Witt said. -

Witt said the nurses went direct-
ly to the district because they feel it
is important for politicians to hear
directly from their employees as
well as from the official negotia-
tors.

“We're within inclies of settling
this dispute, but those inches are
reinforced with concrete and stecl,”
Witt said.

According to the B.C. Nurses’
Union, striking nurses are begin-
ning to suspect that they are
“pawns in a political fight between
the municipalities and the provin-
cial government.”

They say several municipalities
are opposed to the government's
healthcare reforms because the
administration of community
healtheare would pass from the
municipalities to regional health
boards.

There are 85 community health
nurses on the North Shore.

The strike for parity with other
nurses in the province began March
26 und the nurses have been with-
out a contract since Dec. 31, 1991.
