FOR THE vast majority of us,
driving instruction ends when
we get our driver’s licenses.

Once we pass the road and writ-
ten tests, usually in our teens, we
think we know all there is to know
about driving.

However, there is a lot more to
good driving than knowing the
basics, according to Orval Murchie,
owner of Pro-Formance Advanced
Driver Training.

“Just because you've been dri-
ving for 20 or 30 years doesn’t
mean you’re a better
driver than you were
after two years,” he
said.

He said a basic
driving course only
teaches someone how
to control a car; his
“graduate school” is
designed for those
people who have
their licenses and
want to go beyond
the basics.

“Iv’s for people
who want to learn the
limitations of their
cars and of them-
selves. We teach rac-
ing technologies as they can be
applied to the street ... so that peo-
ple can maximize. car-control
skills.”

Everyone from avid car enthusi-
asts to those who just want to
become better drivers have passed
_through the school.

Students have the option of
using their own cars or one of the
school’s specially equipped, race-
prepared vehicles.

Murchie has seen students bring
in cars as diverse as Honda Civics,
BMWs, Porsches and Ferrari
Testarossas. °

A one-day high-performance
program teaches accident avoid-
ance, emergency braking, skill
development and safety.

A iwo-day program covers the
same ground but adds techniques
like heel-and-toe downshifting and
trail breaking.

Mure: ie said this kind of down-
shifting climinates brake-lock when
you have to slow down in a hurry
and it maximizes 100% of a car's
braking capacity.

For example, if you're taking a
comer too quickly and you need to
shift from third to second gear.
Murchie said drivers should do the
following: apply the brake, depress
the clutch and roll the
brake foot onto the
accelerator to give
the engine a “blip” of
1,000 r.p.m.’s, shift
into second, and then
release the clutch.

This is the same
technique race drivers
use to make high-
speed hairpin turns,
he said. It makes the

Trail braking
teaches _— students
about weight transfer

“When we brake, we transfer the
weight of the car from the rear axle
to the front axle. You want to have
most of the braking done before the
turn but you want to maintain brak-
ing in the turn,” said Murchie,
adding “as you’re feeding in more
steering, you're releasing more
braking.”

A third program is a three-day
complete race driving course that is
a stepping-stone to full-scale racing.

Murchie says he cannot create
perfect drivers but said there is no
one who would not benefit from an
advanced driving program.
