Steady srowth calls for expanded service Open letter to West Vancouver Mayor and Council: As homeowners in the Gleneagles-Whytecliff area for the past 18 years we have been aware of a steady growth pattern and welcomed long-awaited services such as the use of Eagle Harbour school as a recreation facility and Caulfeiid Shopping Centre. We view this as just the beginn- ing though, and now that the op- portunity has come to have a full-fledged recreational site and a local updated high school we have become aware that a group of res- idents {rem central West Van- couver oppose this. They are placing in jeopardy a plan that West Vancouver School Board adopted two years ago, that is very exciting as well as man- datory for the rapidly growing _ western portion of West .Van- couver, which services Lions Bay and Bowen Island. There are a mukitude of fami- lies here who have spent countless hours commuting back and forth from educational and recreational classes, playing fields, swimming pool, ice arena and junior and senior high schools. The school bus that runs oace in the morning and after school is not adequate for children. involved in extra- curricular activities. They must re- ly on parents to drive or resort to the tedious task cf waiting and transferring on the Blue Bus, often after dark. Hillside School is sitting on valuable property. It is outdated, does not have a regulation-size playing field, and is known to be critically unsafe in the case of an earthquake. The fact that the school board owns the necessary property at Caulfeild Plateau, has the support of the municipality to do a joint venture pertaining io the recreational and field facilities, as well as generous support for technological equipment from corporate sponsors, is a tremen- dous opportunity. You have the resources, you have our support, and you have the support of the Ministry of Education. If Richmond and Bur- naby can do it, so can we. Thats 2 Front page photo was inexcusable Dear Editor: The April 24 front page photo of Dr. Flather, his hand all bloody, is most upsetting, and especially to those who knew him. It is quite enough to read and hear about it, one does not need an indelibly etched picture in one’s memory as well, f think it is inexcusable of you to have authorized its printing. There were protests when you published a picture of a body be- ing retrieved from Lynn Canyon and that was of someone who was not even a resident.
