facility HELP MAY be at hand for West Vancouver seniors in need of intermediate care who have been told that the Kiwanis Lodge plans to phase out residency for such tenants. By Surj Rattan News Reporter In an Oct. 25 News story, Kiwanis Seniors’ Housing Society president Joe Lindsey said the society plans to opt out of an agreement with the B.C. Ministry of Health to provide housing at Kiwanis Lodge for seniors in need of long-term and intermediate care. He said the building cannot handie the level of care needed for intermediate-care seniors. Lindsey added that another facility needs to be built in West Vancouver to accommodate the needs of seniors who rely on intermediate care. There are currently about 84 seniors living in Kiwanis Lodge. But Dolly Cartwright, president of the North Shore Intermediate Care Society, said her organiza- tion is negotiating with both the Kiwanis and the provincial health ministry to create a separate in- termediate-care facility in West Vancouver. “We are actively pursuing get- ting another facility in West Van- couver, We have approached the Kiwanis, the Ministry of Health and the municipality of West Vancouver and they have all been supportive,’’ said Car:wright. “Our next step will be to find property and get funding from the ministry. She added that there is a ‘‘great need"’ for a seniors’ intermedi- ate-care facility and that there is currently a 24-year waiting list to Bet into existing facilities. “The seniors in West Van- couver are very confused and their families are very upset. They do not have the money to pay for private community facilities,’ said Cartwright. West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Jeremy Dalton said he will meet with both the West Van- couver Kiwanis organization and the provincial heatth ministry over the issue.
