though the back of the kimono is
facing out from the wail, Rawson
took the lower portion of the
front at the opening and fanned it
out so that it can also be seen.

Rawson, who is an interior de-
signer, recommends using curtain
rods for hanging lighter weight
clothing.

Some people also attach dowels
to the base of hangers (tops of the
hangers are always removed) if the
sleeves are long and _ interesting,
and there is plenty of wall space.
This permits ease of hanging while
allowing the sleeves to extend
outward.

Interior decorator Jonathan
Diamond always affixes a dowel
to the bottom of a garment for
weight. Diamond's favorite use of
kimonos is as room dividers.

Real estate broker David Ames
has hung a white damask 19th
century chasuble (the outer gar-
ment worn by priests during the
celebration of Mass) on the dark,
tichly paneled wall of his living
room.

Because the back has more in-
teresting detail than the front,
Ames has it hanging ‘‘backwards”
from a muslin-covered ~topless"’
hanger. Ames notes, though, that
he often turns the garment and
when he does, it teels as though
he’s done an instant redecoration
of the room.

At the Grand Trousseau, a
Boston store that features clothing
and accessories from the 18th cen-
tury to the 1920s and '30s, store
manager Leslie Teeling shows
one-of-a-kind ensemble to a cus-
tomer, a bride-to-be.

“*Wear it first, hang it second,”
says Teeling, as she holds up a
complete bridal outfit from 1925
including the dress, silk headpiece,
veil, the bouquet (made out of
wax flowers with silk ribbon
streamers), the gloves, and even
the official wedding photograph
of the blushing bride.

Teeling can envision the ensem-
ble as a permanent wall arrange-
ment. ‘“‘And you can imagine,"’
she asks, “Show great it would be
with a photograph of the present
bride in full attire hung next to
the 1925 photo?’’
