14 — Wednesday, July 3, 1991 —- North Shore News 1 ® JASON JENNINGS... picked up division rivals the Winnipeg Jets. "NEWS theta Neil Lucente in the 11th round by Canuck WV player drafted by Winnipeg Jets THE WINNIPEG Jets have drafted 20-year-old Jason Jenn- ings of West Vancouver. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter Jennings said he didn’t even know he'd been drafted last week until he read about it the fotlow- ing day in a Vancouver newspa- Tr. “I had an idea just from talking to my coach that I may be drafted but it’s kind of a surprise,’’ he said. Winnipeg picked him up in the lth round; he was the 225th pick overall. The S711’, 195-pound Jennings has just finished his second year on a scholarship at West Michigan University (WMU) where he plays tight wing and centre. - Last season at WMU, Jennings was fifth in scoring with 29 points overall. Although he said it wasn't a great year for him, he was pleased with his performance. And now that he’s been drafted, Jennings says he will have an added incentive to play well next season, “ft gives me a goal. In two years I have to be ready or they won't offer me anything.”” Jennings, who has waited to play in the NHL practically since he first picked up a hockey stick, played minor tiockey at the West Vancouver Minor Hockey Association and spent his bantam and inidget years at the North Shore Winter Club. In 1988-89, he played Junior A hockey for the Richmond Sockeyes in the B.C. Junior Hockey League (BCJHL). Jennings credits Mark Kauf- mann of West Vancouver for some of his success. Kaufmann, a centre, and Jennings started at West Vancouver and played together all the way up to the Richmond Sockeyes. “We've always been a one-two tandem,”’ says Jennings, adding that it was a shock when the two split up — Jennings to WMU and Kaufmann to Yale. Back in B.C. for the summer, Jennings works for a West Van- couver municipal roads crew and is busy training for next scason.
