38 - Sunday, May 5, 1991 ~ North Shore News TRAVEL Canadian is terminal’s main tenant From page 37 on the heels of an Alitalia 747. The scene around the baggage carousels was something like the last flight out of Saigon. The new terminal is right up there with the futuristic United terminal at O’Hare and Delta’s beauty at Orlando. Canadian managers checked those out as well as industry leaders such as Frankfurt, Singapore and Zurich. What they built, and it has a business-like engineer's stamp on it, is a spacious, efficient terminal that is a pleasure to use. The domestic baggage area is enor- mous, with four big carousels, while international arrivals have five carousels. Anew, laser-sorting system makes it harder for the airlines to lose your bags. The non-travelling public has not been forgotten, with a cafe near the arrivals area. Concessions are everywhere, in- cluding a food court with a burger bar and italian and Chinese outlets. Harrods is there, too, and a retail mall with the Caviar House selling five varieties. One place you can’t miss, how- -ever, is Cookies by George, whose customers are led to the two outlets by seductive aromas. A quick check cf duty-free li- quor prices showed Scotch prices higher than you'll pay on Cana- dian aircraft, and a pair of plastic half-litte bottles, as sold inflight, are easier to stash in baggage than Award-winning play opens A.R. Business travellers will fike the two well-appointed lounges, and all weary souls will welcome the 500-room Swissotel when it opens in the fall. The hotel is linked by escalator to the arrivals lobby. This lobby, big, yet with a vaguely comforting touch of an old railway station, provides Ca- nadian with 70 check-in and tick- eting positions, up from 36 in the old terminal. The building, which will be used by other airlines with Canadian as the prime tenant, is also set up for an in-transit system so that pas- sengers connecting through Ter- minal 3 but not wishing to enter Canada will not have to go through immigration and customs. However, it will not be im- plemented until negotiations with Ottawa are concluded. There have been sore minor glitches with baggage trolleys and so on, and of course the terminal was a long time in construction, but Canadian can now put behind it the nightmares of the former terminal, a handicap that was turning off potential customers to the tune of $100 million a year. As the ads say, there is a civi- lized new dawn out there, even in Toronto. Don’t Buy Just Any Cruise! We specialize in over 35 Cruise Lines all over the world.
