Although she’s lived here for 17
years, Wallis will give a rare Van-
couver performance Nov. 24 at
the Coast Atrium Hotel. It’s the
second concert of a series called
Opera Night at the Atrium orga-
nized by loca! soprano Ingest
Suderman.

Judging by her busy schedule
Wallis seems to have found her
footing. But making a comeback
isn't easy when you're not a star,
Although she’s earned an interna-
tional reputation within operatic
circles, appearing on stages from
the Royal Opera House at Covent
Garden to New York's Casnegie
Hall, she hasn’t had the reception
of a Renata Scotto.

And that means she has to work
that much harder.

“If you get out of the swing of
things,” says Wallis, “someone
else is waiting to take your place. |
never became a star, never had
any solo recordings. For stars, it’s
easy to take time out. Bul | have to
be constantly out there pushing to
be remembered — I'm 44 now
and it's tougher. Managers would
rather take someone young and
fresh and untried, because there's
a chance that she might be an
