18 - Sunday, January 14, 1990 - North Shore News North Shore Toastmaster of the Year named THE NORTH Shore Toastmasters Club has named its Toastmaster of the Year. lan Johnson, whoa joined the club in October 1988, said in his acceptance speech, ‘I cannot begin to list the benefits that [ have received since joining. [t used to be that | would have been speechless in this type of situation.” Club president Valerie Hender- son presented an engraved plaque from the club congratulating Johnson “for his commitment to promoting his club, maintaining membership and entertaining us with his humorous speeches."” During its final meeting for 1989 the club installed its new officers and celebrated a successful year. Dance to African drums MOVE TO the thump, thump, thump of African drums in a new workshop at recCentre Ron An- drews. Workshops are offered two con- secutive Saturdays, Jan. 20 and 27 from 2 to 4 p.m., and will involve intense instruction and dancing. Participants should have some dance experience. “If you work hard,’’ says in- structor William Rose, ‘‘you wiil certainly feel the magic of the drum beat through you. There is magic and mystery and perhaps even a certain spirit that comes from the drum."’ Rose is of Latin-African descent and is well-schooled in jazz and modern dance.
