The Cummins turbo diesel is op- tionally available in 1989 Dodge Ram 250 and 350 three-quarter and one-ton pickups, in both two- and four-wheel-drive configura- tions, and 250 and 350 Ram and Power Ram chassis-cabs. [t will also be available on a dual rear wheel Ram D-350 to be introduced in mid-1989. These Dodge Ram models com- prise the heavy end of the Cana- dian light truck market. The engine was developed by the Cummins Engine Co., the industry leader in quality, durability, power and sales of heavy-duty, over-the- road diese! truck engines. The engine is designed specifically for truck applications and is one of the newest on the market. Dodge’s new Cummins turbo diesel is a §.9-fitre (360 cubic inch) in-line, six-cylinder powerplant. The Cummins turbo diesel devel- ops 160 horsepower at 2500 RPM. The Dodge diesel’s pulling power, or torque, is rated at 400 pounds/ feet at a low 1700 RPM — far bet- ter than any full-size diesel pickup on the market. The powerplant includes state- of-the-art truck engine features such as an open combustion chamber design with direct fuel in- jection for excellent fuel economy and turbocharging for top perfor- mance. Acceleration and towing power are better than competitive diesels. Turbocharging also keeps the engine working efficiently at high altitudes.
