$y " sf : - 7 ot 11 - Wednesday, October 5, 1988 — North Shore News Mail halted to seniors RESIDENTS LIVING in West Vancouver's 52-unit Lincoln Gardens seniors condominium are livid over a Canada Post Carp. decision to halt mail deiivery to the complex because a wooden ramp ever sidewalk construction is con- sidered inadequate for letter car- riers. Mail delivery to the 2150 Marine Dr. condominium was halted early last week, restarted Friday, but stopped again this week after a 10-foot jong, four-foot wide wooden ramp built by Buron Homes Ltd. was considered inade- quate by local post office officials. A Buron spokesman estimated the drop from the ramp was about one foot, but the company install- ed dual handrails on the ramp as an added safety feature. Canada Post spokesman Bonnie Benwick said modifications had been made to the ramp but, because it was also used by con- struction workers, it still did not provide unobstructed access to Lincoln Gardens. But Lincoln Gardens resident Alan Jessup said the situation was ridiculous: ‘You've got young neople (letter carriers) that could jump over a fence and now 80- year-olds have to walk eight blocks to pick up their mail.” Jessup said residents, including those in electric wheelchairs and one who was nearly blind, crossed the ramp daily on their treks to pick up mail. Benwick said the post office hoped to restart mail deliveries to the condominium within a week.
