Doug Collins @ vet this straight ® WHAT DOES Brian Baloney tell himself when he goes home from an office in which he is surrounded by flunkeys? Does he persuade himself that the night sparkles with good omens? Flim-flam man though he may be, even he cannot spy happiness in his future as he shuts himself in his tent of nights. In his own con- stituency the boys of Baic- Comeau howl their discontent. And now a whole division of key troops has deserted him. I refer to the National Citizens’ Coalition, which came into being in revolt against the excesses of Trudeauism. The NCC is not a _ party- political group, but its slogan “More Freedom Through Less Government’’ shows that it is smail-c conservative. And with more than 30,000 dues-paying members it is a philosophical and’ political power. The NCC has dumped on our man by asking its pecple to pro- vide no more funds to the Tory Party until he mends his ways. “You're too pink. Until you become more blue, you won't sce any of my green,’’ the NCC asks its people and others to say. Seventy thousand letters con- taining that message have gone out.-The letters also ask folk for money for an NCC advertising campaign designed to persuade Brian to go:on the right course. (Pun intended.) To see this in perspective, you have to imagine the Canadian Labor Congress saying to hell with the NDP and please don’t f support Ed Broadbent. wk ke ok Speaking of the NDP, Mike Harcourt is doing strange things. He puts a'funny bit of cloth on his head and shuffles into the Sikh { Temple for a spot of worship. Praying to Guru Nanak to deliver him some votes. Literally grovell- ing, indeed. Even stranger is that he now favors some sort of general strike to stop the Socreds going ahead with their privatization program, and is saying that ‘‘people will die because of privatization.’’ Since when has the prospect of selling liquor stores and giving rural road contracts to private contractors become a plague like unto the Black Death? “Since when has the prospect of selling liquor stores and giving rural road contracts to private contractors become a plague like unto the Black Death?’’ One can understand the bosses of the B.C.Government Employees Union suggesting such things. They stand to lose union dues. But such guff from Mikey is too much, Could it be that evil souls have taken him prisoner and are stick- ing pins into him to make him say things he doesn’t believe? Pull yer socks up, Mikey, or I will have to invent names for you. Hurricane Harcourt might be a gocd one, I think. xk ke Hurricane (‘‘Hurry,”’ for short) should consider what his political comrades-in-arms in New Zealand are doing. Talk about privatization! Nine government departments including forestry, electricity and supply services have become in- dependent corporations and been told to operate without subsidies, loans or job guarantees. The result is that the number of white-collar workers in the forestry corporation has been reduced to 550 from 2,000. Hit even harder were blue collars, whose numbers have been cut to 200 from 3,000. It took only six months for a forestry department loss of $100 million to be converted into a $50 million profit. How do you like them beans, Hurry? Not only that, but a 10 per cent value-added tax has been placed on everything including food, and a means test has been applied to old age pensions. So far there have been no reports of any deaths. x k * Bad news! Your man Doug of- fered himself as a lunch prize ina fund-raising effort for the North Shore Association for the Mental- ly Handicapped. (No, they don’t eat me for lunch. I take the suc- cessful bidder out for fish and chips or bread-and-lard sandwiches.) Someone offered $230 to dine with Doug. The bad news is that someone else offered $235 to nib- ble with Mary Collins. We wuz robbed! I demand a re- match. . ke wk * On the book front, people at this newspaper are being driven mad by inquiries about how to get “The Best and Worst of Doug Collins.”?
