Red Cross needs donors

DONATING BLOOD is painless
and takes only 30 minutes of your
time, inclusing registration and a
short rest perie-d.

Yet only four per cent of the
eligible population (17 to 65 years
of age) donates blood on a regular
basis, says Rick O'Brien, director
of public relations for the Red
Cross.

“At the best of times, Red Cross
has only a two to three day reserve
of blood on hand,”’ he stressed.

“If an emergency occurs, a two
to three day reserve can quickly be
reduced to less and a day’s supply.

“And I'm talking about the en-
tire province’s supply,”” he said.

O'Brien said it is important for
eligible donors to give on a regular
basis to avert crisis situations.

He pointed out that 80 per cent
of B.C.’s blood requirements come
from the Lower Mainland or
within two hour's travelling time
from Vancouver so it can be sepa-
rated into components. Otherwise,
it can only be used as whole blood.

By separating blood into its
components, four or five people
can benefit, as they receive only
the component they require.

“Depending on the type of
package that is used and how the
blood is processed, you can get up
to five by-products from one unit
of blood,”’ he explained.

Packed red cells are used for
anemia; platelets can be used for
leukemia patients; cryoprecipitate
for hemophiliacs; fresh frozen
