Tapping youth development THE complexities of modern adolescence require meve than a chat with Dad and perusal of Catcher in the Rye. In a recent North Van- couver school board meeting, coordinator for Queen Mary Community School. Ira Applebaum pres- ented board members with the results of the North Shore’s first youth con- ference held earlier this year at the North Shore YMCA. Applebaum, who = spent seven years on east end Van- couver streets working with runaways and other street children before joining Queen Mary in 1982, told trustees that the purpose of the conference was for young people from all social and financial backgrounds to address the growing pro- blems and pressures of the communication and infor- mation bombardment of the 80s. , The conference, Tapping Youth Development, was held April 19. AH arrange- ments and agenda were made by the 12 young people in the youth conference management committee, Applebaum said. WORKSHOPS Subjects covered in the all-day workshops included education, alcohol and drug awareness, sexuality, nuclear disarmament, adolescent suicide, employment oppor- tunities, and university op- tions. Approximately 175 youths attended and took part in the discussions. Applebaum told trustees that sexual awareness and nuclear disarmament were considered by conference participants to be far more important than such nebu- lous concerns as future uni- versity opportunities. “They felt that is was trivial to discuss career aspirations with the threat of nuclear annihilation hover- ing over their heads and close friends attempting suicide.”’ A comparison of 1982 and 1985 Lions Gate Hospital Statistics showed a 400 per cent increase in adolescent suicide attempts, according to Applebaum. Fourteen recommenda- tions were drafted from the April 19 conference, one of the most important of which, according to Ap- plebaum, was the recom- mendation to hold a North Shore youth conference an- Buy WITH Vig YOU FIND IT ADVERTD FOR LESS—WELL Lt REFU HOME FURNISHINGS Warehouse/Showroom OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (2 biks. behind the Avalon} at 1075 Roosevelt Cres., N.Van. £3 §in 985-8738 Other recommendations included establishing a youth advisory board to assist local government and local educa- tion administration in developing policy that af- fects youth. RECOMMENDATIONS The students recommend- ed additions to the North Shore secondary school cur- ticula that would include courses dealing with adoles- cent suicide, sex, alcohol and drug awareness. The group also suggested lobbying the ministry of education for clarification of its philosophy towards and goals for secondary school students and developing a conference to raise adult awareness of youth issues. Applebaum added that conference participants also felt. it vital to maintain counselling services at all schools and to. establish proper youth crisis interven- tion services on the North Shore.
