ee wee 30 - Wednesday, August 7, 1985 - North Shore News YMCA college celebrates 15 years From Page 29 which promotes cultural and business ties. Clark sees the college organized in the future as a place where the community can go for Asian Studies, to fearn the languages of the Far East, etiquette, food, sports and to make business contacts. After Expo, Clark points out, Vancouver will have to fook for expanding new business avenues, and the Far East is one. The college does have its critics who say that such foreign students are a cost and burden to the taxpayer, and that their presence makes it more difficult for Canadian studeis to go to UBC, But past principal Tina Allas says her college graduates haven't gone on to UBC because that university requires students to be land- ed immigrants. ‘Visa’ stu- dents are only allowed into graduate school. A handful of graduates did get into SFU. According to Clark, many students return to Hong Kong after getting a North American degree, which they feel will help them in family businesses. It's not easy for the newly arrived student to adjust. Allas points out that East and West both have dif- ferent forms of etiquette, and this difference makes life here difficult for the student for a while. She teaches a culturalizat- ion course to college stu- dents which eases them into our way of life. For exam- ple, she tells her students that unlike the East, burping is not acceptable here as a sign of a good meal. Chinese students are also cautioned not to speak loudly in public places, such as bus stops (‘‘In Cantonese you have tc speak loudly’’) nor to push to get on a bus as you do in Hong Kong where there are so many people. Students also find our streets ‘‘very scary’’ because they are empty in com- parison with those of Hong Kong. They don’t like to say ‘thank you’, explains Allas, because you naturally assume that a friend will do a favor for you. But Allas tells them “if someone does something for you in Canada, you say thank you.”’ What else has she found out about the students? They don’t like the food, the quiet and sandwiches, They like our clean air, the trees an! people. In Hong Kong, no one speaks to each other but here they do. And they all want to drive a car, because in Hong Kong cars are very expensive.”* Their teachers like them, says Blanche McOrmond who has just retired after teaching for 32 years on the North Shore. She says of her visa students, ‘‘It'san expe- tience | wouldn't have miss- ed. Their culture makes us humble, Their poetry, for example, has been around for 5,000 years.’’ French teacher Moraig Meyer calls it ‘ta rewarding experience for the teacher. It’s a teacher's paradise. The students are really so dedicated to the subject."’ The Chinese like to cele- Canter * information - tine. Canaan Caner S0UEt brate with food.
