Ald. Rod Clark broke the ule that had formed at last week’s meeting (when he was absent) and voted to keep the land, less than an acre, zoned for park use. The land, located between 22nd and 23rd Streets and between Grand Boulevard and Ridgeway Avenue, was part of a parcel purchased tn 1912 for future park use. In an attempt to consolidate odd bits of park land in the mid 1970s, council purchased more residential land for park, intending that this pro- perty would be given over for residential use. Ald John Braithwaite and Frank Marcino, who were on council at the time, were in favor of the *“Shousekeeping’’ re-zoning of the land, which could be divided into seven lots and sold for about $500,000. City planning had apparently been done on the basis of this expected revenue. Mayor Jack Loucks sided with Braithwane and Marcino. Ald. Stella Jo Dean led the attack on the proposed re- zoning, calling the procedure ‘“ammoral’’ in light of the By MAUREEN CURTIS fact that the 1912 council had gone to plebiscite to get per- mission to borrow about $34,000 for the purchase of the land. Ald. Ralph Halli and Dana Taylor were also against the rezoning. Ald. Clark, who had not listened to any lobby- ing, butshad watched the Cable 10 tape of last week's well-attended debate, decided that ‘‘park land 1s nof for sale _ and in my awew this is park land.”’ ‘“*Everybody wins whichever way we vote now we've got. more park Worth Vancouver,’ she ‘than we bargained tor,’’ said. .
