PUERTO RICO — A STRANGE PLACE A breather before embarking I'm glad we decided to spend a few days in Puetio Rico before our cruise .1¢ was good to have a brdather between leaving home and embarking on the ship - partly because I get paranoid when I have to make close connections. Pessimistic? You bet. I can leave home with a firm grip on Murphy's law, prepared for strikes, storms and national disasters - anything to keep me from being where I'm supposed to be. However, Puerto Rico wouldn't be my choice for a vacation. It’s a strange piace. For example, take our arrival at the airport. Late in the evening, our Delta flight was about half full - mostly cruise passengers. Everyone was pretty happy,. lots of chatter and jokes. We walked into the air- port lounge and there must have been two hundred people waiting for some other flight. In silence. All staring at us with totally blank faces. You'd get the same effect by walking into the airport in Buenos Aires, separated from the hotel by complex. waving the Union Jack, and singing “Rule Brittania.” Unlike some other spots in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico has American standards of hygiene where food and water is concerned. Prices show wide variance - food and accommodation can be quite reasonable if you shop around. That doesn’t mean heading for the Hilton. Liquor prices are absurd - you can get rum drinks for a dollar but if you don't like rum, expect to shell out $3- $4 for something else. My worst shock was ordering fruit juice for the kids in a bar and getting billed $3.75 a glass. The local beer is cheap and Brian gave it full marks. Stock up at the duty-free shop before you leave Canada. Bottle goods, ex- cept rum , are 20% higher than here and cigarettes range from $1.35 - $1.50 (A) a package. My family flatly informed me that they didn’t come to San Juan to sightsee - off to the pool. The beach was a nasty-looking barbed wire trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie fence and _ steel gate, designed to keep un- desirables from the hotel ‘We did visit “Old San Juan,” a maze of streets and shops around the harbor. From our hotel, the Palace, it was nearly an hour by bus - for 25¢. The bus stopped in the main square and the only way to explore is on foot. Don’t be too disappointed with the first lot of shops you find - they improve as you move closer to the gover- nor’s residence, La Fortaleza (free guided tours several ' times a day - only takes 15 min.) - Don't miss THE BUT- TERFLY PEOPLE, a combination gallery-bar-re- staurant. The artworks are magnificent, all sizes and colors of creations of tropical butterflies by Drakir Purington and his wife Attenaire. You will probably find one or both of them there and they're happy to chat about the collection. We didn't eat there but heard good reports from others who did.
