freqently asks of jewellers,
the Jewellery Industry
Council did a nationwide
survey of its retail mem-
bership.

The two categones that
were of most interest to the
public were diamonds and
gold.

the Council has taken the

DIAMONDS
Diamonds are rated ac-
cording to what jewellers
call “the four c’s” — cut.

Cut refers to the shape of
the diamond — brilliant
(round), rectangular, pear,
heart, oval or boat-shaped
(marquise) - and to the skill
and precision of the cutting.

A full cut diamond has 58
facets. 33 above the girdle or
outer edge, and 25 below. A
“perfect cut” refers not to
the number of facets (that is
standard), but to their angles
and the proportions of the
stone.

Color, which many think
is the most important
determinant of diamond
value. The ideal diamond is
crystal clear, but such stones
are exceedingly rare. Most
are tinged with yellow or
brown. This may detract
from the diamond's value,
but usually doesn't diminish
its spectacular sparkle.
