The confusion is caused
by the fact that the carpets
are named not for their
patterns but for their places
of origin. Major centres of

production include the
following:
FEREGHAN,. The finest

antique examples of carpets
made on the plains of
Fereghan, to the west of
Teheran, are among the

most sought after of all

Persian carpets. Two basic

pattems are the overall
design and the central
medallion. Predominate

colours are red and bluc,
though an unusual shade of
apple green occurs in some
of the best older examples.

HAMADAN. This city,
about 200 miles southwest of

Teheran, produces carpets -

of a medium texture with a

Patterns comprise geometric
designs, with the main

colours being blue; red and .

pale yellow.

CARPETS

HERIZ. This city has
earned an _ outstanding

reputation for its silk carpets .

over the last 100 years. Its
most common pattern is a

large central medallion filled

features naturalistic designs
incorporating . animals,

human figures, flowers and

trees in soft delicate colours.

QUM. Located between
Teheran and Kashan, Qum
is a large centre of modern
weaving where rugs are
produced in great quantities

today. The patterns ‘often .

are copies of early hunting

with smaller medallions.
Frequently used colours are

copper, light brown and
bluc.
KASHAN. Set in the

centre of a great carpet
weaving region, this city
achieved fame during the
classic period of Persian
carpet art, the 16th century.

Although such carly
examples are not on the
market, some exceptional
examples are available from
the first half of the 19th
century. A popular pattern is
the central medallion cm-
bellished with arabesques,
but overall floral designs also
are common.

KIRMAN. Situated about
450 miles southeast of
Kashan, Kirman is noted for
its exquisite silks, em-

carpets, utilizing colours of
terracotta, gold and bluc.

SHIRAZ. A city in the
southwest part of Iran about
100 miles from the Persian
Gulf, Shiraz is known as the
cradle Persian culture. Its
carpets, made entirely from

wool, most frequently
feature hexagonal
medallions, although a

mixture of geometric and
floral designs is not unusual.
Predominate colours are
dark blue and copper.

SAROUK. Many of the
carpets said to have
originated in Sarouk, a city
to the west of Kashan, may
actually have been made in
nearby Sultanabad. This
well knotted varicty has a
reputation for durability. Its
bold) designs usually are
framed with broad borders

frequently used.

TABRIZ. The second
largest city in Iran, Tabriz
has long been renowned as
one of the leading carpet
centrés of the world. It is
well known for its silk prayer
rugs and for its copies of
famous 16th and 17th
century hunting carpets.

Unfortunately, the quality
of Tabriz carpets has suf-
fered over the years, many
of the fine old designs being
in favour of
thicker pile. Still, the designs
are claborate, the most
common patterns being the
central medallion and the
Tree of Life. Colours are
rich and varied.

Because all Persian
carpets are hand woven, no
two examples are identical.
Likewise, cach has its’ own
individual value - and no
matter what its age or
condition, that value is
significant. With proper
care, the carpet can be
expected to increase in both
value and beauty over the
years.

Carpets should be cleaned
by hand at least every two
years, This removes im-
bedded dirt that can grind
the knots and allows the pile
to regain its lustre. Fraying
should be tended to as soon
as possible.

Carpets placed on the
floor should have an un-
derlay. Those hung on the
wall should be kept well
away from heating units and
should be taken down every
six months for sweeping.
