Once, on a flight from Puerta Vallarta to Los Angeles, Ralph Bellamy sat across the aisle from us and Karen Black a few rows back. Mr. Bellamy was. un- mistakable—although he looked a great deal older than I'd have expected. Ms. Black was totally incognito, by Barbara McCreadie wearing sunglasses as teacups. (Another traveller pointed her out-to us). Not. being particularly Star-struck, the exper- ience was underwhelm- ing. BUT! I did meet John Wayne—and that was terrific! Perhaps because it . was so unexpected, I did something I ‘normally wouldn’t do—but, wait a minute, I’m getting ahead of myself. Brian and I were on our way to Spain, via London. Anyone who has landed in Heathrow airport will tell you that it’s quite a trek from where they park the aircraft to passport corfitrol, and often crowded. This mor- ning, it was jammed. I nearly dropped my sack of “duty free” when, right beside me, I heard that unique “Rooster Cogburn” voice! In the flesh—John Wayne. He glanced down at me and grinned. Normally, I'd have been speechless and have stood there grinning like an idiot but I blurted out, “Hello Mr. Wayne. How was your flight?” And, he started to tell me -all about it! Just think—my husband was marching along beside— carrying the camera and he didn’t even take a picture I'll never forgive him. - Not many movie stars would bother talking to a starry-eyed tourist especially after an exhausting flight. John Wayne was a very nice man. eee The first time I visited the Netherlands, I made the same mistake many tourists — do—lI figured that Holland equalled Amsterdam and that was the only stop we made. We did see some of the countryside because we crossed from Germany by train but a lot of the time I had my nose buried in a book. What a difference when you see the country by car or van. We did it last week—six of us in a Volkswagon van and did we have fun! Even though it is now the peak of the tourist season, the traffic wasn’t bad at all and the drivers were excellent. Our route took us from Amsterdam to the Hague via Haarlem, then through Delft to Breda. We spent a couple of days in the city of Maastricht—right down in the southern tip of Holland. When you're ready to come home, a three hour drive will land you in. Amsterdam’s Schipol (pronounced: ski pole!) airport. For Canadians, who think it’s qujte normal to hop in a car and drive five hundred miles in a day, this route is refreshing.
