Phillips, Instructor at Pacific pi ie coe ee Vocational Lustitute, and was a Gold Medal winner at a past Grand Salon Calinaire. Culinary art form has been with civilized man _ for hundreds of years - the Egyptians and Romans adorned their buffet, tables with lavish creations of edible materials. In North America, culinary exhibits are of fairly recent history. However, culinary centres such as Chicago and San Francisco have now attained world acclaim. The West German city of Frankfurt is the Mecca of the interpational culinary profession. Any chef worthy of his calling must have competed, or at least at- tempted to compete in Prankfurt and obtained a gold, silver or bronze medal of recognition. Canada has always fared well in Frankfurt, and ob- tained second place honours in this exacting competition in 1976, being out-scored only by the Swiss tcam. Vancouver has now reached a level of artistry in foods that rivals Chicago and San Francisco for’ top honours in the culinary arts field on this continent. On March 20, 1979, a culinary exhibit ‘The Grand Salon Culinaire 1979’ will be held at the Hyatt Regency. This show will be attended by the most noted chefs, and students from our excellent colleges. Their art objects promise to be nothing short of sensational. This is not only due to the fact that we have talented chefs here in British Columbia, but the coming show - a preliminary for Prankfurt’s Culinary Olympics - will demand the best of our competitors in order for them to qualify for a spot on one of Canada’s culinary teams. A total of fourteen categories will issue a great challenge to our chefs, and promise a most exciting show for the enthusiasts of culinary art. ® quality with a personat touch © gift baskets for all occasions: Bon Voyage — House Warmings Office Parties — Anniversaries 1458 Marine Drive West Vancouver Grand Salon Culinaire Lavish creations in seafood, stunning scupitures of ice and tallow, exciting creations in sugar, jewel-like petits fours and hors d'oeuvres, gorgeous chocolate carvings cocoa paintings are some of © the wonders to be seen, All of the displays will be evaluated by a panel of judges to determine the winners of six prestigious Grand Awards and a score of gold, silver and bronze medals.
