8 - Sunday, December 20, 1987 — North Shore News Mailbox Reparations letter ‘distorts reality’ Dear Editor: The News recently published a letter- by one F.W. Banks of West Vancouver. Supposedly a rebuttal of my condemnation of the treat- ment of Canadians of Japanese descent, Banks’ letter is nothing if not a pathetic distortion of reality. Attempting to justify actions taken against these unfortunate Canadian; during the Second World War by dredging up the atrocities inflicted on POWs by the Japanese military defies all logic. Is Mr. Banks’ argument: members of the military and police of another nation harmed our mil- itary personnel therefore we are justified in harming Canadian ci- villians of the same race as the former? Even if this absurd _ premise were acceptable, would it not then follow that we should then exact vengeance on Canadian civilians of German, Austrian or Italian blood? Of course we did not and the reason stands out clearly: Cana- dians of Japanese ancestry were victims of a racism which perme- ated British Columbian society. Mr. Banks dozs not address this nor does he grasp the fact that at GIVE SANTA A BREAK .. no point did I deny that grave in- justices were meted out to Allied military personnel in the Second World War — these are well- documented but totally irrelevant to the issue of persecution of Ca- nadian civilians for the reasons given in the preceding portions of this paragraph. And, in closing, let me add (by way of establishing my objectivity) that not only have I read military histories extensively, but 1 am also a proud former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. What I am decidedly not proud of is our We Make It Easy «. to Frame your Vacation ATIFIEIVA CAPILANO WALL 988-2295 treament of members of a visible minority during the Second World War and the continued belief of the misguided few that this treat- ment was somchow excusable.
