ws te 2‘ proposed, sliding scale ransit: ehi VEHICLE owners can breathe a little easier this week. The proposed transit tax that would have ranged from $40 to $120 based on the weight of the vehicle was shelved Wednesday night by the board of TransLink. Last week’s proposal from TransLink was based on the concept that heavier vehicles, as a rule, pollute more. In theory, the plan sounded like it might offer some relief to owners of smaller vehicles, but only a handful of cars scrape under the 1,310-kg limit for the $40 fee. Drive a VW Golf, for instance, and you would have been pay- inquiring ing $75 along with a bunch of mid-sized cars. (If your car weighed over 1,650 kg like most SUVs, you would have been looking at $120 annually.) TransLink says a public opinion survey (cost: $400,000) shows that when the Strategic ‘Transportation, Plan is explained, 74% of regional residents support it, f ; - air x Ate even if they have to pay for it themselves. Nevertheless, its board decided to ask the = | * : 5 me % } x / federal government for funding before recommending any version of the transit levy. | ; Fs pet - ? | NORTH SHORE DEMOGRAPHICS i a] YES = NO opinion _ KNOW Horseshoe Ba 34% 56% 3% 1% Dundarave/ambleside 10% 72% 5% 13% British Properties 1% 59% 15% 19% — big time.
