The women who answer the phone are always cheerful and optimistic, and really keen to help. ‘Their names are, Lorna and Christine. Trouble is, are lately experiencin: downezing, thanks to recent’ decisions in Victoria, and they *. worry about you and me — right now they have been told - they have just another year in which to operate. They have only the period from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as it is to answer calls, . , Of course, they are not in ally sense an emergency agency. They offer informa- ton for the purpose of acquainting us with how we can improve our elder ycars, and thev want to let us know how much help is available along the road. So with the possibility of closure on their minds, they: have laid on themselves a rather heavy trip. _ What they aim to do is to try very hard to scrape up enough money to print a tele- phone information book for us, the same kind of thing that Burnaby Seniors enjoy. It will contain listings for all the references that in their experi- ence we could possibly need. I asked why they felt the necessity for this when there is already in existence a very comprehensive North Shore NEWS photo Cindy Goodman Elder info threatened compilation of telephone numbers put out by North Shore Community Services? Their answer is quite sensi- ble — they feel that the Community book is more than you and I need, as it includes government listings and contacts for First Nations Associations, ratepayer groups, environmental bodies, a lot of which would be needed very occasionally. They think their much simpler list will be of greater value. They also point out that this one will be free for the asking, whereas the Community Services book is something like $17, not easy for everyone to come by. Trouble is, the one they want to produce for us will take some money to prepare and print. They have some help already declared but not enough yet to cover the costs of proper paper, good clear type and a sturdy binding that will wipe off and not wear off. If you can make any sort of contribution, if you think this is something that would be useful to you, or to a frag- ile family member or an ailing friend, please proceed as fol- tows: send your cheque, or carry it down to North Shore Community Services at 1060 Roosevelt Cr., North Vancouver. Or call 985-7138. You will be gratefully received. York House School is now accepting applications for students to enter the Grades 5 & 6 Bilingual Program in September 1997.
