Arsonists
strike school,
vacant bldg

NORTH VANCOUVER
City fire services had a
busy recent long week-
end, with 41 calls made to
the department between
April 4 and April 8.

An arsonist torched a
vacant building April 5 at
2:25 a.m.

The building. one of a row
of three slated for redevelop-
ment. had smoke coming out
of the upper floor.

The fire was beginning to
affect the adjoining town-
homes before firefighters put
out the fire, said North
Vancouver City Fire and
Rescue Assistant Chief Dave
Burgess.

asked to board and secure the
buildings.

The burned building was
not secure, said Burgess.

Two arson attempts at
Williain Lucas Centre school
at) 2132 Hamilton were
unsuccessful,

One occurred April 5 and
the other April 6. said
Burgess.

An attic fire.at the 200-
bleck of East 27th St. dam-
aged the attic and roof of a
one-storey single-family
home. Still, damage was esti-
mated at $50,000.

Firefighters determined
the cause of the fire to be
electrical.

Along with a couple of car
fires, a hedge fire, and dump-
ster fires, “we had a pretty
busy weekend.” said Burgess.

Earlier, on April 2, a 1:37
ara, arson fire at 300-block
Bast 24th caused a few hun-
dred dollars damage to a
garage.

Burgess said residents
should keep al! garages and
carports clean.

pect an apartment resident
who forgot to turn off his

Neighbor Daryl Mcleod
came to the owner's aid by
putting out the fire with a pot
of water from the sink and
taking the owner out to safe-
ty.

The fire occurred at 2290
Marine Dr. Wednesday at
6:51 p.m.

The suite’s owner was
sent to Lions Gate Hospital
suffering from smoke inhala-
tion.
