French students win UBC medals

FIVE NORTH Vancouver = stu-
dents recently walked away with
medals at the province-wide
French public speaking competi-
tion held at UBC.

Hala Karout (‘‘Impressions of
an Immigrant’) of Andre Piolat
School, Sofia De Medeiros (‘‘The
Experience of ‘AdoJescence’’) of
Balmoral Junior Secondary, and
Alexis Walton (‘‘Carmanah
Valley’) of. Handsworth Second-
‘ary all took first place medals in

their respective categories.

Julie Meares (‘‘Beauty’’) and
Karen Lee (‘‘Physically Handi-
capped People’'), both Hands-
worth students, took third place
medals in their respective
categories.

One hundred and forty British
Columbia students from grades six
through 12 participated in the an-
nual Concours D’Art Oratoire
held at UBC on April 24.

This year marked the 10th an-

niversary of the French public
speaking competition, organized
by the B.C. branch of the
parent-run organization Canadian
Parents for French.

The competition provides op-
portunities for French immersion,
francophone and French as a se-
cond language students to hone
their French speaking skills and
share their thoughts and ideas
with students from around the
province.
