The party — National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 4 at Mahon Park — is in fact a community- wide invitation to “pull the plug on crime.’ The idea for National Night Out has its origins in the United States. Similar events are held in Europe. North Vancouver, New Westminster and Coquitlam RCMP are hosting parties for the first time this year. Local mayors have proclaimed Aug. 4 ‘*National Night Out.”’ Volunteers already active in the various crime prevention programs available in North Vancouver will be acknowledged at the event. The evening is also a chance for neighbors to meet each other and to meet with police officers on an informal basis. RCMP displays include the marine patrol, Block Watch, Block Parent, the motorcycle squad, the Unit B freeway patrol -ROC Camaro, police cars, the burgiary squad, drug squad, the general investigation section, traf- fic department and CounterAttack program, crime prevention, and the victim assistance and police counselling programs. Hydro Power Smart, the North Shore Emergency Preparedness program, Crime Stoppers, the ICBC CAT program, The Cana- dian Alarm Association, traffic display, a dragster display, Lon- don Drugs children fingerprinting service, Par-T Perfect, B.C. Transit, McDonald’s, Fletcher’s Meat and Venice Bakery. There will be 2,000 free hotdogs to be had, as well as lots of prizes. Police party sponsors are giving away Air B.C. tickets, car alarms and home security equipment. Special fireworks transit offered BC TRANSIT is providing extra bus, SeaBus and SkyTrain service for this year’s Symphony of Fire event. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29 and on Saturday, Aug. I, Wednesday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 8, BC Transit will operate additional buses to provide shuttle service from the downtown core to the West End. Extra buses will Operate on major city routes into © the downtewn core as well. To meet demand for service in- to suburban argas after the events, extra buses will leave downtown Starting at approximately 10:30 p.m. The extra buses will operate on major city and suburban routes and will also connect with SeaBus and SkyTrain. People taking SkyTrain to the event should transfer at Granville Station to an 8 Davie or 3 Robson bus. These buses will provide ser- vice to the event location near the corner of Denman and Davie streets. The last SeaBus sailing will leave Waterfront Station at 12:47 a.m. and the final SkyTrain will leave Waterfront Station at 1:15 a.m. Extra trains will operate on all event nights. Service will be extended if the need arises. The extra buses, combined with the peak-period levels of service on SkyTrain, and SeaBus service, will encourage people to use transit to get to the event. Customers should check their timetable or call timetable infor- mation at 261-5100 for informa- tion on the time of the last locai trip in their area.
