NVD 44 band and strings given Friday deadline to raise funds A NORTH Vancouver parents’ group fighting to keep the school district’s popular elementary band and strings pro- gram has until Friday to convince the North Vancouver District 44 School Board (NVSB) that it can raise $513,000 to fund the program for the 1992-93 school year. If the District 44 Band and Str- ings Parents’ Association (BSPA) fails to raise the money, the school board will cut the program. The parents’ association is ask- ing District 44 parents who have students in both the elementary and secondary band and strings program to contribute $175 per student to keep the elementary program alive for another year. District 44’s secondary band and strings program will not be cut for the 1992-93 school year. But one North Vancouver parent, who has a student enrolled in the ciementary band and strings program, said she is opposed to having to pay “tuser fees’’ to allow her daughter to continue in the band and strings program. However, BSPA steering com- mittee member Jim Stephenson said parents are being asked to fund the program for the 1992-93 school year only. After that, he said, the associa- tion hopes it can work with the NVSB to find permanent funds to keep the band and strings pro- gram going. “We're trying io save the pro- gram for a year while these fund- ing problems can be sorted out.
