PRESENTATION. HOUSE Gallery has organized a panel
discussion on the subject of family violence and violence
against women this Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. One of the
panelists will be New- York photographer Donna Ferrato,
whose exhibition Living With the Enemy is on display in the
gallery. The above photo, from Ferrato’s book, Living With
the Enemy, was taken in Philadelphia. The panel discussion,
called Voices Against Violence, aiso features American actor
Theresa Saldana (The Commish), Caro! Ward-Hali, executive
director of Emily Murphy House, Pear! McKenzie, executive
director of North Shore Community Services and family
counsellor Mahara Allbrett. The event will be held in Pres-
entation House Theatre. Reservations are recommended.

Music Now: Can you give me

a sense of the music scene in
Austin?

Foley: ‘‘There’s a lot of good

blues, there’s a lot of good coun-
try. There’s a really big alternative
scene, it’s doing really well. You
also have Cajun music, and you've
got the Mexicans, too. It’s a real
hotbed. You've got all flavors.”’
Music Now: Are these influ-
ences changing the way you
approach blues music?

Foley: “Year, it's changed me a
lot because | go out and hear
music all the time. You can’t help
but pick up things off people, even

unconsciously. ! love zydeco,
R&B, all kinds of things.”

Music Now: Have some of
those flavors shown up on
Young Girl Blues?

Foley: “No, my album is a pretty
much a traditional blues record.
It’s got a bit of country blues on it,
but it’s pretty traditional.

Music Now: What kind of
benefits have you realized by
working with a label purely
focused on the style of music
you do?

Foley: “I think independent
labels are great. | didn’t know
anything about the record
business before | signed.

Lthink the benefits are that you
definitely get more artistic control
and there is less pressure on you.”

Nick Bantock scheduled
to give public reading

BOWEN ISLAND author Nick
Bantock will give a public reading
from his popular book, Solomon
Grundy, a pop-up rhyme April 16
at the Vancouver Public Library.

Bantock has retold the children’s
tale of Solomon Grundy with a
macabre brilliance that would set
Mother Goose reeling. The
reading begins at 7 p.m. in room

According to Raincoast Books,
there are now 160,000 copies of
Bantock’s recent bestselling pic-
ture-postcard book, Griffin &
Sabine, in print.

Apparently publisher Chronicle

Books of San Francisco had origi-
nally planned to print only 10,000

,copies, but reaction to the book

was far more enthusiastic than
anyone anticipated.

The final first printing doubled to
20,000 and by Christmas of last
year it was up to 85,000.

Two additional printings this
year bring the figure up to 135,000
plus 15,000 in England and 10,000
in Japan.

Raincoast has announced it will
be the Canadian publisher of
Sabine’s Notebook, the sequel to
Grittin & Sabine. It will be
published this fall, the second in
what is to become a trilogy.
